Kate McKinnon: Cherry Creek Swim Star Chasing Olympic Dreams

May 15, 2026
Kate McKinnon, a Cherry Creek High School sophomore, is breaking swimming records and chasing Olympic dreams with determination and family support.
Kate McKinnon is a name to watch in the world of competitive swimming. The Cherry Creek High School sophomore has already established herself as a dominant force in Colorado swimming, following in the footsteps of Olympic legends like Missy Franklin and Amy Van Dyken. Born and raised in Colorado, Kate was practically born to swim, showing competitive fire from the age of three. Her natural talent and relentless work ethic have propelled her to remarkable achievements at a young age. As a freshman in 2025, Kate burst onto the scene by winning two individual events and two relay races at the state swim meet, and she broke a relay record previously held by swimming icon Missy Franklin. One year later, she continued her dominance by winning four more events and helping lead Cherry Creek to its sixth consecutive state title. Kate's success stems from an extraordinary commitment to her sport. She trains six days a week for two hours daily and hits the weight room three mornings a week before school. Her dedication is self-driven, often turning down opportunities to rest because she knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. Beyond her athletic prowess, Kate is supported by a loving family, including her older brother Connor, who has autism. Despite his challenges with large crowds, Connor serves as the unofficial mascot for the team and is Kate's biggest supporter. Their close relationship motivates Kate to push herself even further. Competing at Cherry Creek High School, a legendary institution that has produced over 200 state championships and numerous Olympians and professional athletes, Kate understands the weight of the tradition she represents. With two high school seasons remaining and the recruiting process just beginning, Kate has her sights set firmly on the Olympics. Her coach believes she has the potential to make the Olympic team, and Kate herself has been vocal about this dream since she was eight years old. As she continues to develop and find the right college program to support her goals, Kate McKinnon represents the next generation of elite American swimmers ready to compete on the world stage.
